Cwtch

A Game to Remember

Most people in the UK know very little about their family history, with two-thirds not knowing anything about their grandparents. This lack of knowledge can create significant barriers to meaningful conversations with family members, making discussing light-hearted topics and more complex, sensitive issues challenging. As a result, many individuals may feel disconnected from their heritage and struggle to build deeper relationships within their families.

Cwtch (pronounced kuch) is a game that aims to make it easier to bring families closer and help them learn about their histories. Players are encouraged to interact by talking, drawing, performing, or acting out their stories, and they can hold onto their memories by writing, scrapbooking, and storing treasures in the journal.

The typefaces used in the game were intentionally designed to be large and clear, ensuring that players of various ages and reading abilities can easily engage.

The graphic elements are a crafted array of circles and spirals. These shapes symbolise personal connection, reminiscent of peoples’ unique fingerprints representing individual journeys. They also embody a sense of continuity and return, meaningfully reflecting reuniting with loved ones. Importantly, none of the shapes are made “perfect.” Instead, they possess a handmade quality that emphasises the human touch.

The visual elements are intentionally free from specific cultural or heritage references. This ensures that all families can feel welcomed in the game regardless of their backgrounds, and the focus remains on shared human experiences and connections.
